Safran Teams Up with Aura Aero to Revolutionize ERA Aircraft with Hybrid-Electric Power
Safran Helicopter Engines and AURA AERO have established a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the propulsion initiative of the ERA aircraft (Electric Regional Aircraft). Both collaborators will work together to assess solutions for the integration of the turbo-generators crafted by Safran, aligning with the specifications identified for the ERA, the 19-passenger regional aircraft. This MOU stems from an initial agreement, finalized in April 2022 between AURA AERO and Safran Electrical & Power, which encompassed the electric apparatuses for this aircraft.
Designed for pioneering propulsion structures such as AURA AERO’s ERA, a turbo-generator consists of a gas turbine paired with one or multiple electric generators that manage pressure, along with a cutting-edge system for moderating power and electrical voltage. Safran Helicopter Engines, leveraging the global knowledge of Safran in the sector of electric devices, beginning with Safran Electrical & Power, has already conducted bench tests on various types of turbo-generators, across different power levels.
“Becoming a collaborator with AURA AERO is excellent news for Safran Helicopter Engines. We possess the same commitment to decarbonizing air travel, and we are prepared to contribute our proficiency in hybrid-electric propulsion, honed through extensive trials,” states Florent Chauvancy, Head of Sales at Safran Helicopter Engines.
Je´re´my Caussade, CEO of AURA AERO, remarks: “We are thrilled for Safran Helicopter to join our team by providing their expertise and keen insights into this initiative.”
Constructed by AURA AERO, the ERA is a 19-seat regional aircraft with hybrid-electric propulsion, projected to achieve its inaugural flight in 2026, aiming for entry into service in 2028. Letters of Intent have already been signed for several hundred aircraft models.
