Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) has awarded a £300m, six-year agreement with Safran Helicopter Engines UK to ensure ongoing assistance for the helicopter’s RTM322 engine while supporting UK employment.

The six-year arrangement, set to commence on 1 April 2024, aims to provide a more efficient and adaptable framework that maximizes availability and assesses performance based on agreed standards, guaranteeing the Merlin’s operational capabilities during crucial missions such as delivering UK maritime force protection, anti-submarine warfare, and amphibious medium lift capacity.

Minister for Defence Procurement James Cartlidge stated:

“The adaptable Merlin has consistently served as a reliable asset for the Royal Navy, safeguarding and facilitating global missions.

“This new support agreement will enhance the operational availability of the Merlin, enabling it to persist in submarine detection, executing maritime patrols, transporting troops, and conducting casualty evacuations.”

Keith Bethell, Director – Helicopters at Defence Equipment and Support, mentioned:

“Over the years, the Merlin has distinguished itself as an exceptionally versatile resource for the armed forces, and Safran’s proficiency has played a pivotal role in this success through meticulous maintenance of the RTM322 engine.

“This contract guarantees over 30 highly skilled positions in the UK, primarily located in Fareham, and demonstrates our commitment to ensuring the engine is properly supported and maintained in an optimal manner.”

Currently, there are two variants of the Merlin helicopter operational within the Royal Navy.

The MK2 variant boasts advanced radar and sonar technologies, making it an effective adversary submarine tracker, while also being deployed for maritime surveillance, troop transportation, casualty evacuation, search and rescue, and various contingency operations.

Since its induction into service in 2014, the Merlin MK2s have been utilized from multiple platforms across the Royal Navy, including the Queen Elizabeth Class carriers, the Daring Class destroyers, the Duke Class frigates, and the RFA vessels.

The other variant currently operational by the Royal Navy is the MK4, which includes various modifications tailored for the Royal Marines. These upgrades feature a fast-roping system that allows for the swift deployment of Special Forces from the main cabin door.

Through numerous agreements, including a partnership with Rolls Royce, Safran has been providing engine support for the Merlin’s RTM322 since 1998.
