Saudi Arabia Expands Its Fleet with Four More Airbus A330 MRTTs

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has commissioned four additional Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft for the Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF).

The initial aircraft of this batch will commence conversion in early 2026; they are scheduled to be operational and integrated into the RSAF by 2027 for air-to-air refueling and transport operations.

“This recent acquisition reflects the exceptional level of client satisfaction with the A330 MRTT,” stated Jean-Brice Dumont, Head of Air Power at Airbus Defence and Space. “This marks the third agreement made by Saudi Arabia for the A330 MRTT, establishing the RSAF as one of the most significant MRTT operators globally.”

The agreement also encompasses a comprehensive logistics support package, including spare parts, training provisions, and operational assistance for the new quartet of aircraft.

All RSAF A330 MRTT units are equipped with hose and drogue configurations, boom systems, and refueling receptacles, enabling the A330 MRTT to be replenished from boom-equipped tankers.

Collaborative Industrial Partnership

In conjunction with this agreement, Airbus signed an Industrial Participation (IP) agreement with GAMI (General Authority for Military Industries) in January 2024, aimed at developing and enhancing the industrial ecosystem in the region in alignment with Vision 2030, a Saudi government initiative focused on diversifying the nation’s economy.

This pact also involves the transfer of technology and expertise regarding the RSAF A330 MRTT to domestic enterprises. SAAMS, the joint venture formed between SAMI (Saudi Arabian Military Industries) and Airbus, will serve as the primary channel for industrial localization.

The A330 MRTT stands out as the most advanced new-generation tanker and transport aircraft, commanding a 90% market share outside the USA, with 82 orders secured from 15 nations across Europe, Asia, America, and Oceania.
