“Unveiling a New Alliance: The Upcoming RAF and Qatari Air Force Squadron in the UK”
Celebrating a New Era: The Joint RAF & QEAF Typhoon Squadron Launches at RAF Coningsby
Yesterday marked a significant milestone with the official inauguration of the joint Royal Air Force and Qatar Emiri Air Force (QEAF) Typhoon squadron at RAF Coningsby. This historic event was presided over by Defence Secretary Ben Wallace and his Qatari counterpart, who also signed a Statement of Intent to establish an additional collaborative squadron.
As part of the partnership, the UK has proposed to host Qatar’s newly acquired nine Hawk aircraft at a British RAF location. This initiative could lead to the formation of a joint RAF and QEAF Hawk training squadron, enhancing operational capabilities.
“Today, we embark on an exciting new chapter in the enduring defence partnership between the UK and Qatar,” stated UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace. “This collaboration will not only strengthen the bonds between our Armed Forces but will also foster prosperity and security for both nations.”
This strategic alliance presents an opportunity for RAF personnel to gain increased aircraft flying hours while providing the QEAF with access to top-tier RAF-accredited training. Additionally, it promises significant long-term investments in RAF infrastructure and training facilities.
His Excellency Dr. Khalid, Minister of State for Defence Affairs in Qatar, and a former fast jet pilot trained at RAF Valley, took to the skies aboard a Typhoon. This firsthand experience showcased the expertise, skill, and professionalism of 12 Squadron.
Since its formation in June 2020, 12 Squadron has achieved several training milestones, including heavy weapons training and participation in exercises alongside the Royal Navy.
The newly established headquarters at RAF Coningsby boasts a design crafted by over 30 subcontractors from both national and local supply chains. This flexible, multifunctional facility is poised to support the evolving requirements of the RAF.
Building on the accomplishments of 12 Squadron, which stands as the UK’s first joint squadron since World War II, the potential for a new joint Hawk training squadron further solidifies the UK’s defence relationship with Qatar. This collaboration significantly contributes to the security and stability of the Middle East.
