Kelvin Hughes Unveils Cutting-Edge SharpEye™ Radar System on SAS Drakensberg

Kelvin Hughes, a global leader in designing and supplying navigation and security surveillance systems, has proudly announced the successful installation and commissioning of its SharpEye™ radar system on the South African Navy’s fleet replenishment ship, SAS Drakensberg.

The system features both X and S Band SharpEye™ radars, along with IMO compliant displays and a focused tactical display that incorporates the Kelvin Hughes Advanced Agile Tracker for optimal helicopter approach and control.

With advanced target detection capabilities, the solid-state SharpEye™ radar delivers premier maritime situational awareness. Utilizing digital pulse compression and Doppler processing, SharpEye™ can effectively identify objects with a low Radar Cross Section (RCS), from semi-submerged entities to the smallest uncooperative crafts, even in challenging weather conditions. Coupled with the Agile Tracker, this radar system ensures reliable target tracking performance against fast and highly maneuverable surface and air targets.

The SAS Drakensberg is recognized as the largest and most sophisticated naval vessel designed and constructed entirely in South Africa. Its primary mission is to support and assist naval forces at sea, allowing the South African Navy to deploy its assets for extended durations over vast distances. Notably, the vessel is engineered to operate two large helicopters simultaneously, enhancing operational capability. The Kelvin Hughes radar system provides crucial Helicopter Control and Tracking capability, ensuring flight safety is meticulously met.
