Leonardo Unveils Next-Gen M-346 Block 20 Upgrade Initiative!

At the Farnborough International Air Show, Leonardo has unveiled the introduction of a comprehensive capability enhancement package for the M-346 integrated training system, which includes the aircraft’s essential avionics, navigation/identification features, mission equipment, and ground training functionalities. This initiative aligns with the necessity to adapt pilot skills to the evolution dictated by contemporary multi-domain conflict environments, advanced combat aviation technologies, and information management systems.

This recent advancement capitalizes on the innate growth potential embedded in the M-346 architecture, in addition to a decade of validated operational experience with prominent air forces worldwide. It represents a vital aspect of a larger organizational digitization roadmap initiative, entirely consistent with Leonardo’s long-term vision. Consequently, both training and combat variants will gain from these enhancements, thereby providing enhanced offerings to the marketplace across a diverse range of uses, while allowing for substantial opportunities for further advancements in the future. The ‘M-346 T Block 20’ and ‘M-346 F Block 20’ are the names assigned to this new standard.

The new Block 20 standard will extend beyond the platform itself, encompassing the entire system, including the ground-based training infrastructure, and will be facilitated by a widespread adoption of digital solutions backed by AI technology.

The cockpit of the Block 20 standard will showcase two expansive area displays, one for each seat, replacing the existing six multifunctional screens, alongside a low-profile head-up display. These will be integrated with a new digital video/data recorder and an advanced augmented reality helmet-mounted display. The revamped cockpit will align the human-machine interface with those found in cutting-edge and future frontline combat systems, offering superior training quality (i.e. look & feel along with a highly immersive environment) and enhanced situational awareness during operational tasks. The ‘M-346 Block 20’ will also feature upgraded navigation, weapon management, flight management systems, and an IFF – Identification of Friend or Foe – transponder.

Particularly for the M-346 F variant, additional vital capability improvements include an AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar system with fire control capabilities, the integration of new munitions for both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, along with a built-in missile data link.

The entire Ground-Based Training System (GBTS) approach to training (multi-media and classroom courses, flight/mission simulation, virtual and live/constructive training) will elevate to the new standard through the incorporation of virtual reality support and AI applications.

Furthermore, enhanced digitization will serve as a crucial enabler for more efficient technical support, driven by the implementation of virtual maintenance and the “connected fleet,” a highly efficient infrastructure utilizing Advanced Data Analytics and High-Performance Computing to bolster Integrated Logistics Support services.

Lorenzo Mariani, Co-General Manager of Leonardo, stated: “Training constitutes a core segment of expertise at Leonardo, and the M-346 integrated training system serves as the foundation of our value proposition to ensure that fighter pilots are fully equipped to confront modern and complex aerial challenges, both now and in the future. As we actively engage in next-generation combat air developments, this latest evolution of the M-346 underscores our commitment to embedding optimal training solutions in this endeavor. We firmly believe that the constantly evolving attributes of the type will continue to deliver unparalleled benefits for users within its market segment, both for training and operational/light fighter roles, establishing it as a prime candidate for the future of pilot training in Europe and beyond.”

Marco Zoff, Leonardo Aircraft MD, remarked: “Delivering ongoing enhancements for the M-346 has been integral to our identity for years, and we’re thrilled about today’s announcement illustrating how the M-346 is and will remain at the cutting edge of technology. We have made substantial investments in a 360° digital transformation to produce state-of-the-art products and services. These enhancements are also manifesting into the superior capabilities that the M-346 will provide. We anticipate demonstrating the advanced features and possibilities of the Block 20 standard for both training and combat operations, as we work to incorporate the new solutions into this authentic training and operational ecosystem.”

With over 100 aircraft delivered to major operators globally and more than 120,000 flight hours accumulated in operational service with customers, along with the exceptional training capabilities provided by the International Flight Training School – IFTS in collaboration with the Italian Air Force, the M-346 has positioned itself as the most comprehensive training system for fighter pilots, effectively addressing emerging demands for cost-effective combat operations. The latest innovations allow its superior advantages and characteristics to evolve further for the benefit of existing and prospective operators.
