“Spain Enhances Air Defense: New NASAMS Systems on the Horizon”
Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (‘KONGSBERG’) has finalized an agreement with the Spanish government for the provision of the latest iteration of the NASAMS air defense system as part of the modernization initiative for the Spanish Armed Forces’ air defense capabilities.
The value of the contract is estimated at approximately EUR 410 million.
“We are thrilled to enhance our enduring partnership with the Spanish Army and the Spanish Air and Space Force through deliveries that will significantly bolster Spain’s current NASAMS capabilities and further solidify the collaboration between Spain and Norway,” remarked Eirik Lie, President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.
“As one of the earliest adopters of NASAMS, Spain has depended on this sophisticated and battle-tested system to guard against both existing and future threats,” stated Tom Laliberty, president of Land & Air Defense Systems at Raytheon, an RTX enterprise. “With this agreement, Spain will strengthen its existing air defense capacities, while also contributing to the broader European security framework.”
The contract signing comes after the award notification submitted by the Spanish Armaments Directorate, Dirección General de Armamento y Material (DGAM), on 19 April, which has been conveyed by KONGSBERG.
NASAMS is the foremost medium-range air defense system globally, collaboratively provided by KONGSBERG and Raytheon.
Spain was the initial international user of NASAMS and has utilized this system for over two decades. Spanish NASAMS units are presently stationed in the Baltics, functioning as part of NATO’s Air Shielding Mission. Currently, there are 13 nations, including NATO and partner countries, within the NASAMS user consortium.
