Spanish Air Force Welcomes Its Inaugural H215 Helicopter
Albacete, October 4, 2016 – In a significant event at the Airbus Helicopters facility in Albacete, the Spanish Air Force officially received its inaugural H215 helicopter. This model is recognized for its robust design and cost-efficient performance, tailored for a wide array of missions. The acquisition was finalized in July by the Spanish Ministry of Defense, facilitated through the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA).
Part of the acclaimed Super Puma lineage, the H215 features a dual-engine configuration and heavy rotorcraft characteristics, enhanced with cutting-edge technology that meets rigorous safety standards. It is equipped with multifunctional digital displays and a sophisticated 4-axis autopilot, ensuring flight envelope protection and remarkable precision in challenging environments.
Final test flights for the helicopter were conducted at the Albacete plant on September 22, where it underwent custom painting and was outfitted with mission-specific systems, significantly improving its Search and Rescue (SAR) and Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) capabilities. The aircraft includes extended-range fuel tanks, an emergency buoyancy system, high-frequency communication equipment, a hoist, and a cockpit compatible with night vision goggles.
The Spanish Air Force currently operates various helicopters from the Super Puma series, in both civilian and military configurations. These aircraft serve within three SAR squadrons and the 402 Air Force Squadron, which handles the transport of high-ranking officials. The new H215 is set to join the Air Force’s 802 Squadron, known for its RCC Canarias operations, and is expected to reach its base in Gando (Gran Canaria) before year’s end.
The H215 will be operational immediately after a brief training program for its crews, who possess considerable experience with other Super Puma variants.
“We sincerely appreciate the Air Force’s continued trust, and I am honored to present a helicopter that combines power, speed, reliability, and cost-effectiveness, all while optimizing operational expenses,” stated Francisco Vergé, General Manager of Airbus Helicopters in Spain. “We wish you many successful flight hours, backed by our dedicated support services.”
