Triumphant Launch: KF-21 Showcases IRIS-T Air-to-Air Missile in Impressive Test Firing
On April 4, an IRIS-T missile was skillfully launched from the KF-21 Boramae platform. The European short-range air-to-air missile (designated AIM-2000) renowned for its exceptional close-quarters combat and interception capabilities has been selected for integration into the Korean indigenous combat aircraft.
Merely 10 months post its inaugural flight, the fighter program has successfully conducted its first live missile test. This trial aimed to confirm the safe detachment of the missile from the aircraft, now affirming that the IRIS-T is primed to equip the KF-21 as one of the globe’s most dependable air-to-air missiles.
Having been integrated into platforms such as the Eurofighter Typhoon, JAS-39 Gripen, F-16, EF-18, F-5, and Panavia Tornado, the missile has once again showcased its exceptional versatility across diverse platforms.
The anticipated deployment of the KF-21 Boramae is scheduled for 2026, whereby IRIS-T will serve as the standard short-range missile for the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) within the KF-21.
The successful involvement of Diehl Defence in the Korean KF-21 Boramae fighter initiative underscores the company’s status as a premier supplier of guided munitions. Diehl Defence extends its heartfelt congratulations to Korea Aerospace Industries, Ltd. (KAI), the system integrator and manufacturer of the KF-21. The collaborative efforts of both teams at KAI and Diehl Defence have led to remarkable achievements, and Diehl Defence stands ready to continue its dedicated support for the program.
