“Unleashing Innovation: Rheinmetall and MBDA Collaborate on Groundbreaking Laser Defense for Germany’s Navy”

Rheinmetall and MBDA Deutschland have formed a collaboration in the domain of high-energy laser systems. The two companies intend to develop, integrate, and assess a laser prototype for the German Navy’s K130 corvette.

With the ability to target at light speed, offering exceptional precision and minimal collateral damage, lasers signify a groundbreaking evolution in military technology. For the first time, this capability is set to be tested under near-operational scenarios utilizing a prototype installed on a German corvette. The specifics and allocation of responsibilities between the two companies will be finalized once the performance criteria are provided by the Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology, and Support, Germany’s defense procurement agency.

In anticipation of this strategic partnership, Peter Heilmeier, Head of Sales and Business Development at MBDA Deutschland GmbH, states that “the collaboration between Rheinmetall and MBDA will greatly benefit the Bundeswehr. Both companies will leverage their distinct strengths to ensure the success of this German Navy initiative.”

Werner Krämer, Managing Director of Rheinmetall Waffe Munition GmbH, encapsulates the initiative by declaring: “We will work closely together to harness the military capabilities of laser technology for the Bundeswehr, enhancing its operational readiness and combat effectiveness. Compared to other nations, our firms possess unmatched expertise. Lasers provide new tactical possibilities on land, at sea, and in the aerospace field. Together with the German Navy, we intend to advance this groundbreaking technology.”
