“Unveiling Innovation: RTX’s Pratt & Whitney Launches GTF Hot Section Plus”

Pratt & Whitney, a segment of RTX, is launching Hot Section Plus (HS+), a premium upgrade for the PW1100G-JM engine that powers the Airbus A320neo aircraft lineup. Originating from the Pratt & Whitney GTF Advantage™ engine, which promises double the time on wing compared to the existing Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engine, HS+ will deliver 90 to 95% of the durability advantages associated with the GTF Advantage.

“HS+ incorporates the durability enhancements of the GTF Advantage hot section into today’s GTF engine,” stated Nick Tomassetti, vice president of Sales & Marketing at Pratt & Whitney. “Clients utilizing the existing GTF engine model will have the chance to nearly double their time on wing.”

HS+ comprises roughly 35 part numbers and will be integrated during maintenance sessions. This option will be available for acquisition by customers, with installations commencing in 2026. GTF engines equipped with HS+ will be fully interchangeable and compatible with both the current GTF and GTF Advantage engine variants, enhancing the efficiency of operations with a diverse fleet.

The GTF Advantage boasts the latest advancements in the hot section within the single-aisle segment. In the high-pressure turbine (HPT), the upgrades entail a sophisticated airfoil design paired with enhanced coatings. The HPT and combustor also feature refined cooling hole size, shape, and placement, utilizing advanced drilling methods to minimize oxidation.

The GTF engine stands as the most energy-efficient option for single-aisle aircraft, achieving up to 20% greater fuel efficiency in comparison to the previous generation of engines, leading to notable cost reductions for operators.
