“Skyward Bound: Bayraktar KALKAN Takes Flight in Turkey’s Defense Revolution”
The Turkish enterprise Baykar has successfully conducted tests on their latest drone, the Bayraktar KALKAN, capable of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL).
This marks a notable milestone as it enables the drone to function from various sites without requiring a runway.
The KALKAN finished its 30th trial flight, during which engineers collected vital insights regarding its systems. Throughout the flight, it achieved a height of over 14,500 feet and has accumulated a total of 70 flight hours thus far.
The drone features an indigenous camera developed by Baykar, the BG-160, which enables it to capture high-definition images day and night through thermal imaging technology. This renders the KALKAN optimal for tasks involving reconnaissance and surveillance.
The KALKAN ascends vertically using electric motors before shifting to a gasoline engine for extended flights. This hybrid approach allows it to remain airborne for over 7 hours.
Baykar stands as a prominent Turkish leader in drone innovation and exports the majority of its offerings. Since 2003, they have been exporting and have achieved remarkable milestones, establishing themselves as the top supplier in defense and aerospace exports in 2021, 2022, and 2023. Their Bayraktar TB2 and AKINCI drones have already reached a total of 34 nations.
