Kelvin Hughes Unveils VTS Radar Technology for Enhanced Safety at Port of Marseille Fos

Kelvin Hughes Secures Key Radar System Contract for Marseille Fos Port

A global frontrunner in navigation and security surveillance solutions, Kelvin Hughes has announced a significant contract with French firm AVON Communications. This partnership involves supplying five SBS-700 radar systems, which will be integrated into the Marseille Fos Port Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS).

The Marseille Fos Port consists of two harbours: the Eastern Harbour, spanning 1,000 hectares within the city of Marseille, and the Western Harbour, which covers 12,000 hectares located 70 km from the city. This expansive port, larger than Paris, stands as France’s busiest maritime hub, efficiently handling a diverse range of cargo such as hydrocarbons, bulk liquids (including oil, gas, and chemicals), bulk solids (like minerals and cereals), general cargo (containers and additional packaging), and serving as a prominent cruise ship terminal.

The SBS-700 radar systems are meticulously designed to adhere to the standards of a Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) system, as outlined in IALA recommendation V-128. Each X-band system will comprise an SBS 700-1 single transceiver and an SBS 700-2 dual redundant transceiver. Featuring an advanced magnetron transmitter, the SBS-700 offers high dynamic range, low-noise front end, and innovative FET modulator technology.

Paul Mariner, Regional Sales Manager at Kelvin Hughes, shared his insights:

“Securing this vital contract reinforces the confidence in our SBS VTS systems, which already deliver unmatched protection and surveillance capabilities for ports, coastlines, and offshore oil & gas facilities globally. We eagerly anticipate collaborating with AVON Communications to enhance the capabilities of the Marseille Fos Port.”
