Qatar’s First Naval Patrol Vessel Embarks on Its Maiden Voyage!

The formal inauguration of the innovative patrol vessel (OPV – Offshore Patrol Vessel) “Musherib,” entrusted to Fincantieri by the Qatari Ministry of Defense as part of the national naval acquisition initiative, took place today at the Muggiano (La Spezia) facility. This occasion was attended by Italian Minister of Defense Lorenzo Guerini, Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Khalid bin Mohammed Al Attiyah, Chief of Staff of the Qatari Emiri Navy Maj. Gen. Abdulla Hassan Al Suleiti, along with the Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, and was welcomed by Fincantieri’s Chairman and CEO, Giampiero Massolo, alongside Giuseppe Bono.

This launch, carried out privately and adhering to all current health protocols, followed the initial steel cutting of the vessel “Sumaysimah,” the fourth corvette of the same initiative.

The “Musherib” OPV, expected to be delivered in 2022 and designed in accordance with the RINAMIL standards for Fast Patrol Vessels (FPV), is poised to be a multifunctional ship capable of various missions, spanning from surveillance to combat roles.

With an approximate length of 63 meters and a width of 9.2 meters, it can achieve a maximum speed of 30 knots and accommodate a crew of up to 38 personnel. Its propulsion system features four variable pitch propellers, two on each side, paired with individual diesel engines.

Furthermore, the vessel is equipped to deploy a RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat) utilizing a crane situated at the rear section.

The contract, valued at nearly 4 billion euros for Fincantieri, entails the procurement of seven naval vessels, including four corvettes, one landing platform dock (LPD), and two offshore patrol vessels (OPV), along with support services in Qatar extending for an additional 10 years after the delivery of the ships.

All vessels will be entirely fabricated in the Group’s Italian shipyards, ensuring operational continuity until 2024, providing substantial benefits to major Italian defense sector stakeholders.

Fincantieri is recognized as one of the largest shipbuilding entities in the world, excelling in diversification and innovation. With a rich heritage spanning over 230 years and the successful construction of more than 7,000 vessels, Fincantieri maintains its headquarters and all specialized engineering and production capabilities in Italy. Presently, the Group operates 18 shipyards across four continents, employing nearly 20,000 people and is esteemed as the premier Western shipbuilder.
