Northrop Grumman Unveils the Game-Changing Next-Gen Bushmaster® Chain Gun®!
Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC), a leading manufacturer of medium-caliber artillery, is introducing its state-of-the-art M230 Link Fed (M230LF) Dual Feed Bushmaster® Chain Gun®, which features two ammunition supply routes for the first time. This cutting-edge 30x113mm medium caliber chain gun is a proven variant of the M230LF chain gun optimized for combating uncrewed aerial systems (C-UAS) and ground combat scenarios.
The launch of a dual feed system removes the requirement for diverse ammunition belts within a single feed.
Now, the ability to switch between two unique types of munitions is attainable. A commonly suggested ammunition setup includes XM1211 proximity fused rounds for C-UAS and XM1198 high explosive, dual-purpose projectiles for anti-armor roles.
The M230LF is presently at Technology Readiness Level 6. Achieving this benchmark allows for live-fire demonstrations expected in early 2025.

Dave Fine, vice president of armament systems at Northrop Grumman: “The M230LF Dual Feed Bushmaster Chain Gun offers amplified flexibility by enabling the user to switch between ammunition paths with dual-feed technology. With advanced innovation combined with five decades of combat-tested proficiency, this next-generation cannon will empower operators to rapidly address threats. This chain gun marks the latest expansion of our Bushmaster series, providing reliable, multipurpose capabilities in response to the dynamic threat environment.”
About the M230LF Dual Feed Bushmaster:
As the first global medium caliber chain gun to feature a dual feed, the M230LF supplies adaptable lethality well-suited to the changing battlefield. The weapon system can immediately alternate between ammunition routes, equipping operators to effectively target different operational needs with various 30x113mm ammunition types.
A dual feed configuration grants operators the ability to toggle between advanced ammunition rounds with a straightforward switch, boosting mission flexibility and destructive power. The choice to select between two munitions guarantees that targets are engaged with the most appropriate round for their type, optimizing timing, alleviating logistical challenges, and allowing for more engagements before needing to restock the system.
For users currently utilizing the M230LF, the Bushmaster shares a similar weight to the single feed M230LF and features 60%-part compatibility, resulting in quicker routine maintenance and minimized downtime. Production of single feed M230LF cannons will continue for those who prefer that version.
