Innovative Agreement Between U.S. Army and Patria

The U.S. Army’s Combat Capabilities Development Command Armaments Center, in collaboration with Patria, has successfully finalized a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA). This initiative focuses on assessing the feasibility of integrating a turret-mounted, breech-loaded 120 mm mortar weapon system into U.S. mortar carriers. The goal is to evaluate the functionalities of the Patria Nemo mortar system, its compatibility with U.S. mortar carrier weapon platforms, and fire control systems, while also examining the use of existing U.S. 120 mm mortar ammunition in a breech-loaded system like the Patria Nemo.

This collaboration reflects the U.S. Army’s commitment to equipping Armored and Stryker Brigade Combat Teams with swift, accurate indirect and direct fire capabilities, prioritizing crew safety and significantly reducing their physical workload. In late 2018, the Army initiated a market inquiry to source effective partners for the development and manufacturing of the 120 mm Mortar Future Indirect Fire Turret (FIFT). Patria provided a response utilizing the capabilities of the Patria Nemo mortar system.

The Patria Nemo is a turret-mounted, remotely operated 120 mm mortar system, adept at both direct and indirect fire, capable of executing up to 6 rounds in simultaneous impact fire missions. Boasting high protection levels, Patria Nemo is both lightweight and compact, enabling easy integration on light tracked chassis, wheeled armored vehicles, and naval vessels.

“The partnership between the U.S. Army and Patria illustrates the transformative potential that modern turreted mortar systems can offer to military forces and underscores Patria’s leadership in this innovative sector. This also marks a natural progression of the collaboration between Patria and the U.S. Government, initiated by the Patria Nemo sales to other nations through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program,” states Jussi Järvinen, President of Patria’s Land Business Unit.

U.S. Foreign Military Sales represent a form of security assistance, allowing the U.S. to provide defense items and services to international allies.
