The inaugural edition of an innovative cybersecurity competition, organized by the “Pôle d’Excellence Cyber” cluster in collaboration with Airbus Defence and Space and Thales, is set to feature its final event on November 24 during the European Cyber Week, taking place in Rennes from November 21-25. This contest targets students from top-tier engineering schools and universities in France specializing in computer science, highlighting the diverse range of careers in the rapidly expanding field of cybersecurity, which sees an average annual growth of over 10%.

The contest commenced on October 21, consisting of a series of online technical challenges encompassing areas such as cryptography, forensic analysis, and software vulnerability assessments. After this qualifying round, 48 outstanding students will be chosen to comprise 16 teams of cybersecurity specialists, competing in the finale on November 24, 2016, in Rennes.

For the French market alone, Thales aims to hire a minimum of 200 engineers with cybersecurity expertise in 2016. We are perpetually scouting for talent, from recent graduates to seasoned professionals with highly specialized skill sets. Thales supports forward-thinking recruitment initiatives like the European Cyber Week student challenge. One final note: best of luck to all participants!

The finalists’ mission will be to safeguard critical energy infrastructures (fossil, nuclear, or gas) from cyber threats posed by an ‘international organization’. Their objective will be to mitigate damages and safeguard natural sites adjacent to each target. The top three teams will be declared winners and receive technology prizes (like computers, tablets, or smartphones) along with training courses and/or employment opportunities at Airbus Defence and Space or Thales, prominent players in the cybersecurity arena.

“This initial challenge organized during European Cyber Week will facilitate our interaction with esteemed graduate institutions focusing on computer security and enhance student awareness of the enriching career prospects available in the dynamic and technologically sophisticated field of cybersecurity,” stated Paul-André Pincemin from the “Pôle d’Excellence Cyber” cluster.

François Lavaste, Head of Cyber Security at Airbus Defence and Space, added: “This challenge serves as a remarkable opportunity to ignite interest among young talent in IT security. Beyond this event in France, we are pursuing similar initiatives in Germany and the United Kingdom, targeting candidates with specialized profiles pertinent to cyber security, including system architects, risk and security analysts, and penetration testers—all of whom are essential for excellence and innovation.”
