In the Netherlands, the Defence Cyber Command (DCC) alongside Thales has entered into an agreement to establish an advanced cybersecurity training and testing facility, known as the “Cyber Range”. Through this “Cyber Range”, the Dutch Ministry of Defence aims to acquire several essential cybersecurity competencies, particularly for the education and training of its personnel.
To consistently enhance the dependability and security of its sensor, weapon systems, command & control systems, information systems, networks, and digital infrastructure, the DCC needs to swiftly and effectively respond to evolving threats, while also acquiring and testing new cyber-defense strategies early on. With the Thales “Cyber Range”, both small-scale and large-scale training exercises can be conducted.
In this facility, cyber-attacks, incidents, and protective strategies can be simulated and evaluated against various Defence systems, IT environments, and communication pathways. As part of the contract, Thales will construct the facility and provide ongoing support for the next three years.
Brigadier General and Commander DCC, Hans Folmer, stated, “The Cyber Range represents a significant advancement for the Defence Cyber Command (DCC). It is a venue where diverse forms of cyber operations can be simulated. This is crucial for training our personnel and assessing our systems.’’
The Defence Cyber Command (DCC) is a segment of the Dutch Armed Forces and is tasked with developing and enhancing cyber capabilities and executing cyber operations. A crucial aspect of the DCC is the Defence Cyber Expertise Centre (DCEC), aimed at boosting the specific knowledge and innovative potential of Defence within the cyber sphere.
The Dutch Ministry of Defence has a long-term partnership with Thales in cybersecurity. Specifically, Thales secures Defence NATO communication pathways and has recently initiated a study on Cyber Situational Awareness in collaboration with the DCC and the Dutch research organization, TNO. The study investigates how current SEWACO systems (Sensors, Weapons and Command Systems) can be securely utilized in the future. The Cyber Range represents a major leap in expanding this cooperation.
