“BAE Systems Celebrates Historic MOU Between Türkiye and the UK for Typhoon Jet Acquisition”
BAE Systems has expressed approval for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Republic of Türkiye and the UK Government concerning the potential acquisition of Eurofighter Typhoon jets.
The accord was officially signed today by Turkish Minister of National Defence, Yasar Güler, and UK Secretary of State for Defence, John Healey, during the International Defence Industry Fair in Istanbul.
Charles Woodburn, Chief Executive BAE Systems, stated: “This Memorandum of Understanding between the Governments of Türkiye and the UK highlights the significance of their enduring defence collaboration through NATO and the essential function Typhoon serves in security and defence across Europe and the Middle East.”
Typhoon is a multi-role, highly sophisticated fighter aircraft, currently operational with nine air forces globally, and is renowned for its performance, reliability, availability, and survivability. The jet plays a pivotal role at the core of NATO missions and offers air policing along Europe’s eastern frontier. Throughout 2023 and 2024, Typhoon jets executed 80% of the operational tasks carried out by the Eurofighter partner countries—Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK—underscoring the operators’ trust in its capabilities.
BAE Systems holds a vital position in the development, manufacturing, and support of Typhoon jets for various air forces worldwide, with a significant portion of the work conducted at the Company’s facilities in Lancashire.
The programme delivers considerable economic benefits to the UK, sustaining approximately 21,000 jobs on average, including highly skilled engineering positions. It is a standout success in exports, contributing £1.4bn in international sales each year and generating around £1.6bn for the economy. BAE Systems will persist in collaborating closely with the governments of Türkiye and the UK to finalize an arrangement for the procurement of Typhoon aircraft and related supplies in the near future.
