Denmark Unveils Advanced Lockheed Martin TPY-4 Radar to Bolster NATO’s Defense Strategy
The Danish Acquisition and Logistics Organization (DALO) has officially chosen Lockheed Martin’s TPY-4, a cutting-edge ground-based air surveillance radar, to boost Denmark’s long-range air defense capabilities. With this decision, Denmark becomes the fifth nation to implement this advanced system, joining a coalition of NATO partners embracing state-of-the-art radar technology.
“This marks a significant advancement in integrated deterrence,” stated Rick Cordaro, vice president of Radar and Sensor Systems at Lockheed Martin. “The TPY-4 radar’s superior capabilities enhance interoperability among allied air defense networks, allowing Denmark and its regional allies to swiftly counter evolving threats.”
The acquisition includes the delivery of three TPY-4 radars, with an option for a fourth, thereby fortifying the Royal Danish Air Force and bolstering NATO’s collective security. This advanced solid-state phased-array radar uniquely detects and tracks airborne targets in real-time. Its open-architecture design ensures seamless integration with existing air and missile defense systems, enhancing collaboration between Denmark, its regional partners, and NATO forces. By maintaining a technological advantage in an ever-changing threat landscape, the TPY-4 system is designed for mobility, reliability, and global deployment, and is already utilized by over 45 nations spanning six continents.
Collaborating with European Industry
Partnerships within the European industrial sector are vital to the success of the TPY-4 program. Lockheed Martin draws on a broad European supplier network, positioning this and other international radar initiatives as a robust U.S.–European industrial alliance. The company’s enduring partnership with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KDA) has been pivotal in the production of the inaugural TPY-4 radar, particularly the Platform Electronics System manufactured by KDA. Recently, KDA successfully assembled the first TPY-4 radar produced by an international partner, further strengthening this collaboration.
