Finland’s Milestone: Unveiling the Maiden F-35A in Partnership with Lockheed Martin

In a notable ceremony held at Lockheed Martin’s production facility, distinguished leaders from the United States and Finland marked the significant rollout of Finland’s inaugural F-35A Lightning II for the Finnish Air Force. This event signifies the dawn of a new era in Finnish aerial capabilities and reinforces vital trans-Atlantic ties.

“As a proud NATO member, Finland is dedicated to being a reliable defense provider in the northern flank,” stated Antti Häkkänen, Finland’s Minister of Defence. “Our substantial investments in industrial capabilities reflect our belief that a robust defense industry can not only enhance the F-35 program locally but also contribute to its global impact.”

“In Finland’s unique operational landscape, the focus on survivability, lethality, and collaboration is crucial,” mentioned Major General Timo Herranen, Commander of the Finnish Air Force. “The integration of the F-35 will elevate our capabilities significantly, and we eagerly anticipate the commencement of F-35 operations next year.”

The F-35 program involves 20 allied nations, with 13 in Europe, actively serving in 16 military organizations worldwide. Finland’s F-35s will enhance interoperability among various branches of the Finnish Defence Forces, providing seamless connections across domains and improved situational awareness for both Finland and its NATO allies.

“The F-35 consistently proves its effectiveness in deterring threats and achieving success in combat,” remarked Greg Ulmer, President of Lockheed Martin Aeronautics. “This advanced aircraft will offer the Finnish Air Force a strategic advantage in safeguarding the nation while reinforcing alliances in the Nordic region and beyond.”

Finland’s industrial sector is integrated into a global network of over 1,900 F-35 suppliers. Lockheed Martin collaborates with more than 30 Finnish companies and academic institutions, fostering a transfer of innovative technologies that stimulate growth in Finland’s aerospace industry.

The first F-35A aircraft is scheduled for delivery to the Finnish Air Force in early 2026, with pilot training occurring at Ebbing Air Force Base, Arkansas. Finland’s acquisition plan includes 64 F-35As, which will represent the largest F-35 fleet in Northern Europe. The arrival of the first aircraft in Finland is expected next year.
