Hanwha Aerospace Delivers Advanced K9 Howitzers and K10 Ammunition Vehicles to Norway

Hanwha Aerospace has today revealed that it has dispatched a new consignment of four K9 Self-Propelled Howitzers and eight K10 Ammunition Resupply Vehicles to Norway, a crucial pledge to bolster the Norwegian defense capability.

The consignment is part of a 2022 agreement to deliver additional K9 VIDAR (Versatile Indirect Artillery) and K10 units, building on the successful execution of the initial contract for 24 K9s and six K10s signed in 2017.

The artillery units are anticipated to reach Norway in approximately two months for transfer to the Norwegian Armed Forces after they undergo necessary inspections.

“This delivery of K9 and K10 units represents a significant milestone in enhancing collaboration between Hanwha and Norway, as we are wholeheartedly dedicated to manufacturing and supplying products that fulfill Norwegian specifications promptly,” remarked Kim Dong-hyun, leader of the Land Systems Business Group at Hanwha Aerospace. He further stated, “Hanwha will focus its energy on fulfilling this contract and contribute further to strengthening Norway’s defense posture.”

Norway serves as a vital member of the K9 User Club, a strategic platform for nations utilizing K9 systems to exchange knowledge, experience, and expertise regarding the operation, maintenance, and training of the K9 system.

Since 2001, the K9 has been procured by nine nations – Turkey, India, Poland, Norway, Finland, Estonia, Australia, Egypt, and Romania – with approximately 1,800 K9 units currently in operation worldwide.

The 155mm/52-calibre K9 Thunder stands as the world’s most reliable tracked self-propelled system, capable of delivering consistent, precise, rapid effects beyond a 40km range with high firing rates and volumes. Weighing in at 47 tons, the K9 is optimized for ‘Shoot and Scoot’ capability, allowing it to fire multiple rounds and promptly relocate to a different position to evade counter-fire.

The K10 is recognized as the world’s first automated ammunition resupply vehicle based on the chassis of the K9 howitzer, sharing a majority of its components and characteristics for logistical support.

This vehicle can assist the K9 by transporting and resupplying 104 shells of 155mm artillery ammunition and 504 units of charges under challenging conditions. Its fully automated ammunition resupply system guarantees efficiency in logistical support and tactical maneuvers in adverse battlefield environments.
