Rheinmetall Secures €208M Deal for Spanish Army Artillery Ammo!

The Spanish administration has tasked Rheinmetall, the globe’s premier producer of artillery munitions, to deliver a total of 94,200 155mm shells. The framework accord finalized for this objective has an estimated value of approximately €208 million. These artillery munitions are slated for delivery to the Spanish armed forces between late 2024 and the close of 2025, with an option for a two-year extension.

The munitions now procured are already in use by the Spanish client; this marks the second framework accord. The new request highlights Rheinmetall’s dependability as a collaborator to the Spanish armed forces for the provision of essential products.

The ER02A1 high-explosive (HE) shells boast a maximum range of 30 kilometers in the boat-tail (BT) configuration and nearly 40 kilometers in the base-bleed (BB) version. The latter is equipped with a unique mechanism at the base of the shell. This component warms the air produced by the shell itself during its flight, thereby minimizing drag and extending the maximum range.

The recent agreements in the sphere of 155mm artillery munitions emphasize Rheinmetall’s premier technological status in the development and fabrication of ammunition in Europe. Framework agreements with multiple NATO allies ensure a steady supply of artillery munitions.

Just on 12 February 2024, the ceremonial ground-breaking for a new facility took place in Unterlüß, Lower Saxony, with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in attendance. This facility will manufacture explosives and components for rocket artillery as well as specifically for artillery munitions. On 18 February 2024, Rheinmetall and a Ukrainian partner organization formalized a memorandum of understanding that will also facilitate the future production of artillery munitions in Ukraine.
