Israel Set to Enhance Airpower with Acquisition of Two KC-46 Tankers
The Israeli Ministry of Defense declared on Wednesday that it will purchase two Boeing KC-46 Pegasus aerial refueling tankers through a $500 million agreement funded by U.S. military support.
This arrangement, which requires approval from Israel’s ministerial committee for defense acquisitions, will be formalized with the U.S. government. The ministry indicated that the contract also encompasses the integration of systems manufactured in Israel, although further specifics were not disclosed.
The newly acquired aircraft will augment Israel’s existing fleet of four KC-46 tankers. According to Ministry Director General Amir Baram, the procurement will bolster the nation’s long-range operational capabilities, enabling the air force to exert influence over extended distances. Israeli tankers were recently utilized during a 12-day aerial operation against Iran in June.
The United States grants Israel thousands of millions of dollars in yearly military aid, mainly for the acquisition of American-manufactured weaponry and gear. In recent months, multiple lawmakers from both political parties in the U.S. have expressed concerns about the continuity of such support, referencing Israel’s conflict in Gaza and anxieties regarding domestic fiscal priorities.
