Lockheed Martin’s 21st Century Security Vision

With Lockheed Martin’s 21st Century Security® vision, the company aims to deliver mission-focused capabilities that are interoperable and networked to offer a new standard of connected protection.

In an uncertain and volatile world, a strong defense industry requires anti-fragility – investing ahead of need to ensure production of critical security systems can withstand disruptions and thrive in the face of adversity.

Lockheed Martin aims to build a more advanced, resilient and collaborative defense industry – working with our industry and commercial partners to deliver more cutting-edge capabilities faster and more affordably to our customers.

Centering on three lines of effort:

  1. Building a more advanced defense industry by aggressively adopting and inserting 21st century digital technologies into the defense enterprise with a standards-based, open architecture approach.
  2. Increasing industry resilience by applying anti-fragility measures to ensure operations withstand shocks and disruptions on a large scale and at a faster speed.
  3. Fostering a more collaborative ecosystem that harnesses the advanced infrastructure of the United States and our allies by establishing key production and maintenance facilities in trusted nations.

F-35: The Central Node in 21st Century Security

A centerpiece of 21st Century Security is the F-35 Lightning II. One of the core differentiating capabilities of the F-35 is its unmatched situational awareness enabled by the advanced radars and sensors onboard. Through network-enabled operations, the F-35 can serve as an information and communications gateway, sharing its operational picture with the ground, sea and air assets, making the entire force more effective.

A concrete example of the F-35’s pivotal role in 21st Century Security® has been demonstrated in several exercises its taken part in over the last few years. In one exercise, a High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) aboard an amphibious asset was connected to an F-35. By utilizing and integrating F-35 data, the HIMARS successfully destroyed a target on land from 70 kilometers away.

Driving Innovation at Scale

This is just one example of how Lockheed Martin is fielding future-focused capabilities that integrate new and existing systems with advanced, open-architecture networking technologies. By leveraging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) , autonomy, and resilient cyber solutions, Lockheed Martin can provide enhanced range, speed, agility, resilience, and rapid decision-making advantage for their customers.

Lockheed Martin also prioritizes the digital transformation of its internal processes by implementing digital engineering and production methods.

A Focus on the Mission

As the landscape continues to change, one thing remains constant—outpacing threats by connecting systems and people to make informed, faster decisions is essential for a safer, more secure world. Through its 21st Century Security® vision, Lockheed Martin is advancing the industry and delivering integrated, tailored solutions fit for the mission, with deterrence being the ultimate goal.
