Lockheed Martin Unveils Groundbreaking TPY-4 Radar for the U.S. Air Force
April 7th, 2025 – Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] has successfully handed over the initial TPY-4 radar to the U.S. Air Force after triumphantly concluding the Early Phase Testing, signifying a pivotal achievement for the Three-Dimensional Expeditionary Long-Range Radar (3DELRR) initiative.
“The successful achievement of the initial testing phase and the acquisition of the first TPY-4 radar system highlights our commitment to delivering the U.S. Air Force advanced, high-performance systems that cater to their progressive demands and anticipations,” stated Rick Cordaro, vice president of Lockheed Martin’s Radar and Sensor Systems. “The 3DELRR project is critically significant for global air surveillance and defense capabilities, as well as safeguarding the homeland.”
Significance of the Development
- The inaugural delivery of the TPY-4 to the U.S. Air Force signifies the many radars set to be delivered and deployed as a segment of the 3DELRR initiative.
- The TPY-4’s delivery triggers the onset of government tests.
- This delivery aligns with the awarding of a contract within a series of radar acquisitions by the U.S. Air Force, forming part of the 3DELRR effort.
What is TPY-4?
- Ready Today, Equipped for Tomorrow: The radar system is entirely digital at every transmit/receive component, featuring an exceptional software-defined sensor architecture, allowing the radar to swiftly adapt to emerging threats and operational tasks.
- Detect and Deter: TPY-4 identifies smaller, more challenging-to-detect, next-generation threats. The radar is proficient in recognizing targets amidst jamming, offering long-range early warning for missiles, which enables quicker responses to developing threats.
- Portability: The system is available in both stationary and highly mobile versions, and it can be transported via C-130, C-17, truck, rail, or helicopter. With TPY-4, operators need not compromise on performance or mobility.
