Thai Air Force Expands Fleet with Four State-of-the-Art Gripen Fighters Fueled by GE Aerospace Technology

The Royal Thai Air Force is set to enhance its aerial capabilities with the acquisition of four cutting-edge Saab Gripen E/F fighter jets, equipped with GE Aerospace’s advanced F414-GE-39E engines. This significant deal stems from a government-to-government agreement between Thailand and Sweden.

“The F414-GE-39E engines provide the necessary power, reliability, and versatility for next-generation combat operations. We are proud to support Thailand as it expands its fleet of Gripen aircraft,” stated Shawn Warren, Vice President and General Manager of Combat and Trainer Engines at GE Aerospace. “This agreement further solidifies our ongoing partnership with Saab and various international air forces.”

This contract expands upon Thailand’s existing inventory of Gripen C/D aircraft, which have been operational since their acquisition in 2008, powered by GE’s RM12 engine—a variant of the F404. Thailand is now the third nation to incorporate the Saab Gripen E/F powered by the F414-GE-39E engines, following Sweden and Brazil. This landmark purchase also marks Thailand as the first adopter of this advanced fighter in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.

With over 1,600 F414 engines delivered and more than 5 million flight hours achieved, the F414 engine family consistently demonstrates exceptional performance in challenging conditions, supporting advanced combat platforms globally.
