Saab Elevates Sweden’s Maritime Defense with Next-Gen Anti-Ship Missiles
Saab has inked a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration for the enhancement of Sweden’s coastal anti-ship missile capabilities. The total order value amounts to SEK 800 million, with deliveries set to commence in 2026. A significant portion of the order revenue was recorded in the third quarter of 2024.
The agreement encompasses Saab’s RBS15 Mk3 anti-ship missile, which is integrated on a launch module mounted on a vehicle. Currently, Sweden employs the earlier RBS15 Mk2. The coastal anti-ship missile capability was reinstated in the Swedish Armed Forces in 2016 and will now be augmented with the RBS15 Mk3 on advanced launch platforms.
“Sweden will experience a considerable enhancement in capability with an anti-ship missile that boasts a more sophisticated target seeker, extended range, and a larger warhead. RBS15 is meticulously designed for the intricate environment and severe weather conditions typical of the Baltic Sea,” states Görgen Johansson, head of Saab’s business division Dynamics.
RBS15 Mk3 has an effective range exceeding 200 km, can be deployed from naval vessels and vehicles, and is principally aimed at maritime targets. The system is innovated and manufactured by Saab along with its German collaborator Diehl Defence.
