“Unleashing Innovation: Safran’s Next-Gen M88 Engine to Supercharge Rafale’s Performance!”
At the Paris Air Show, Safran is unveiling the M88 T-REX, a sophisticated enhancement of its M88 engine. Aligned with forthcoming specifications of the Dassault Aviation Rafale, this engine will capitalize on the established dependability and performance of the M88 while driving it to unprecedented levels with a thrust boost to 9 metric tons with afterburner.
To achieve this level of performance, the M88 T-REX will incorporate significant, targeted enhancements. The revamped low-pressure compressor will support augmented airflow intake. The high-pressure turbine will employ innovative materials and advanced cooling architectures, while the nozzle will benefit from optimized aerodynamics. With these upgrades, the M88 T-REX will uphold the essential advantages of the current M88 in terms of dimensions, modularity, fuel efficiency, and overall ownership costs, while delivering an additional 20% thrust. Maintainability and fleet management will also be improved due to the interoperability between the components of the M88 T-REX and those of the existing M88.
“We’re excited to be launching this engine initiative, which will enhance the M88’s performance to meet the evolving demands of our defense customers in an increasingly volatile geopolitical environment,” remarked Christophe Bruneau, EVP Military Engines, Safran Aircraft Engines. “The advancement of the M88 T-REX will also enable us to expand our technological range, improving our entire product suite and strengthening national independence.”
Safran is currently executing risk assessment analyses in preparation for the engine’s progression. The qualification of the M88 T-REX is aligned with the expected rollout of the Rafale F5 variant.
