“Safran Launches Enhanced M88 Engine: The Future of Rafale’s Power Upgrade!”

At the Paris Air Show, Safran is introducing the M88 T-REX, an advancement of its M88 engine. Compatible with upcoming specifications of the Dassault Aviation Rafale, this engine will leverage the established reliability and performance of the M88 while pushing it to new thresholds with a thrust enhancement to 9 metric tons with afterburner.

To attain this degree of capability, the M88 T-REX will feature substantial, focused improvements. The upgraded low-pressure compressor will facilitate increased airflow intake. The high-pressure turbine will utilize novel materials and advanced cooling systems, and the nozzle will gain from refined aerodynamics. With these advancements, the M88 T-REX will preserve the key benefits of the existing M88 regarding dimensions, modularity, fuel efficiency, and total cost of ownership, while providing 20% additional thrust. Maintainability and fleet oversight will also be streamlined due to the compatibility between the components of the M88 T-REX and those of the current M88.

“We’re thrilled to be initiating this engine initiative, which will elevate the M88’s performance to address the dynamic requirements of our military clientele in an increasingly unpredictable geopolitical landscape,” stated Christophe Bruneau, EVP Military Engines, Safran Aircraft Engines. “The development of the M88 T-REX will also empower us to broaden our technological portfolio, enhancing our entire product lineup and reinforcing national autonomy.”

Safran is presently conducting risk mitigation analyses in advance of the engine’s evolution. Qualification of the M88 T-REX is synchronized with the anticipated deployment of the Rafale F5 variant.
