Sikorsky Launches the Next Generation S-92® Phase IV Main Gearbox

Sikorsky, a subsidiary of Lockheed Martin, disclosed the eagerly awaited S-92® Phase IV primary gearbox, a groundbreaking advancement that sets a fresh standard for dependability, efficiency, and safety in the commercial helicopter sector.

The S-92 Phase IV primary gearbox is equipped with an auxiliary lubrication system that activates autonomously in the occurrence of primary oil pressure failure, eliminating the necessity for immediate landing and allowing operators to navigate to their destination securely. This innovative solution has been validated through over 800 hours of stringent testing, with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification expected in 2025. Four gearboxes have been finalized at the company’s Stratford headquarters, and customers are already eager to become early adopters.

“The Phase IV primary gearbox enhances its predecessor’s reputation as one of the top and most dependable gearboxes in the field, and exemplifies Sikorsky’s ongoing investment in the S-92 platform,” stated Leon Silva, vice president of Global Commercial and Military Systems at Sikorsky. “We have dedicated more than a decade to designing, testing, and optimizing the Phase IV primary gearbox for outstanding performance, and we are excited to see it establish a new industry benchmark.”

Sikorsky allocated over $100 million towards the development of the gearbox, enabling clients to fulfill future mission requirements and emphasizing the company’s dedication to improving the S-92 platform. The S-92 helicopter serves as the backbone of the offshore energy sector and is a trusted choice for search and rescue, state transportation, and various critical missions around the globe.

The launch of the Phase IV primary gearbox signifies a significant milestone in Sikorsky’s continuous endeavor to enhance the capability and safety of the S-92 fleet. With an average lifetime availability exceeding 90%, numerous S-92 aircraft servicing the rigorous offshore energy sector achieve more than 1,500 flight hours annually on average. As the offshore energy landscape continues to progress, the S-92 Phase IV primary gearbox is ideally positioned to accommodate the growing demands of deepwater operations, offering a safe and trustworthy option for transporting personnel, equipment, and supplies to isolated locations.

Sikorsky has declared multiple enhancements to the S-92 helicopter in recent months, including extended scheduled inspection intervals and a one-time life extension for specific primary gearbox housings. These enhancements will eradicate more than a year of downtime caused by inspections and enable operators to securely maintain their aircraft in operation and generating income for a longer duration. The earned life credit is up to 1,200 hours / 3,600 ground-air-ground cycles, translating to an additional 12 to 18 months for an average S-92 offshore oil operator and over 24 months for others.
