SYNAPSIS Unveils Cutting-Edge AEGIS Combat System Integration
Innovative software module streamlines integration between navigation and combat systems
Anschütz has unveiled a significant upgrade to its SYNAPSIS integrated navigation platform. This newly created, defined data interface seamlessly connects SYNAPSIS to the Gigabit Ethernet Data Multiplex System (GEDMS), which serves as the navigation information distribution network on vessels equipped with the AEGIS Combat System. This enhancement, developed within the Royal Australian Navy’s Warship Integrated Navigation and Bridge System (WINBS) program for Hunter-class frigates in 2025, represents a critical advancement in the evolution of SYNAPSIS architecture.
SYNAPSIS efficiently consolidates data from a variety of navigation and mission sensors to facilitate safe navigation and effective ship control. With the integration of the new GEDMS interface, SYNAPSIS is now capable of exchanging navigation data and receiving sensor status information from AEGIS-approved sensors. This interface offers a robust pathway for distributing consistent, validated, and reliable navigation data across ship systems, significantly enhancing interoperability among AEGIS-related naval platforms.
To enable this functionality, Anschütz has developed a specialized software module within SYNAPSIS that standardizes data formats and establishes defined bidirectional data exchange with GEDMS. Furthermore, the SYNAPSIS Conning application has been refined to showcase the status and selection of AEGIS-approved navigation sensors directly on its system status page, promoting efficient ship control, expedited operator awareness, and enhanced system monitoring.
The introduction of the GEDMS interface strengthens the modular, scalable architecture of SYNAPSIS. Future naval platforms will allow navies and shipyards to leverage a mature, pre-validated engineering approach that mitigates technical and programmatic risk, simplifies integration with AEGIS systems, and enhances data consistency between navigation and combat systems across fleets.
AEGIS, developed by Lockheed Martin, is utilized by the US Navy and a number of allied fleets globally. SYNAPSIS, Anschütz’s modular integrated navigation and bridge system, is operational on major naval programs including the Hunter-class frigates, the German Navy’s F125 and K130 classes, and the UK Royal Navy’s Type 26 and Type 31. Additionally, a diverse array of government and commercial vessels rely on SYNAPSIS technology. Over 1,200 ships across the globe currently utilize integrated systems from Anschütz.
With the implementation of the GEDMS interface, SYNAPSIS WINBS continues to solidify its reputation as a future-ready, interoperable navigation system, designed to address the evolving requirements of modern naval operations.
