Unveiling the SSN De Grasse: A New Era of Sea Trials Begins
SSN De Grasse Completes First Sea Trial on February 24, 2026
The fourth Barracuda-class nuclear attack submarine, SSN De Grasse, has successfully conducted its inaugural sea trial, paving the way for future performance assessments. Scheduled for delivery to the French Navy later this year, this trial is a key milestone in the Barracuda program.
Following a series of dock tests since its launch in May 2025, SSN De Grasse’s successful operation is a culmination of efforts that included the commissioning of its nuclear reactor in December 2025. Testing was carried out in various facilities, ensuring that all systems and equipment meet rigorous standards.
This significant achievement in the Barracuda program is reflected in the operational status of the first three submarines that have already been inducted into service: SSN Suffren (June 2022), SSN Duguay-Trouin (April 2024), and SSN Tourville (July 2025). The remaining submarines, SSN Rubis and SSN Casabianca, are currently under construction, with staggered deliveries anticipated throughout this decade.
Managed by the French defense procurement agency (DGA) alongside the French Atomic Energy and Alternative Energy Commission (CEA) for the nuclear components, the Barracuda program is set to replace the aging Ruby-class SSNs that have served the French Navy since the 1980s. Naval Group oversees the design, production, and logistical support for these advanced submarines, with significant contributions from TechnicAtome for the nuclear boiler systems. The Barracuda program guarantees the French submarine fleet’s operational capabilities until at least 2060, marking it as one of the era’s pivotal military developments. Around 2,500 personnel, including approximately 800 subcontractors from Naval Group, are involved in the Barracuda series production.
Engineered to address both current and future military demands, the Barracuda-class SSNs offer enhanced versatility, improved performance, and superior armament compared to earlier classes. Renowned as some of the stealthiest submarines globally, they provide the French Navy with significant combat advantages. Equipped with MBDA’s naval cruise missiles (NCM) for strategic deep-strike missions, these submarines also utilize F21 heavyweight torpedoes and the SM39 anti-ship missile, enhancing their offensive capabilities. Additionally, they feature advanced systems for discreetly deploying Special Forces underwater.
