Saab Secures $46 Million U.S. Army Deal for Advanced Giraffe 1X Radar Systems
The U.S. Army has granted Saab Inc. a $46 million agreement for the provision of its Giraffe 1X radar systems.
As per the Pentagon, this contract was awarded to Saab Inc., located in East Syracuse, New York, after a sole proposal was received through an online request. Operations will take place in East Syracuse and are anticipated to be finalized by September 29, 2025. The Army Contracting Command at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, holds the contracting authority under contract number W31P4Q-25-C-0037.
The Giraffe 1X is an agile 3D air surveillance radar crafted for ground-based air defense operations. This system delivers target information for engagement, UAV detection, and Counter-Artillery, Rocket, and Mortar (C-RAM) alert functions within a singular platform.
It can act as the core sensor in Very Short Range Air Defense (VSHORAD) systems, serve as a gap-filler alongside larger systems, or provide a specialized Counter-UAS solution. The radar is proficient at identifying and tracking low, slow, and diminutive aerial objects, a rising issue in modern warfare.
Weighing under 150 kilograms, the system is sufficiently compact to be positioned on mobile units or situated in fixed locations. Saab asserts that the radar scans its entire search volume every second, facilitating uninterrupted 360-degree monitoring and swift identification of aerial threats.
The system’s modular design and minimal power consumption render it versatile for safeguarding bases, infrastructure, and maneuvering forces against emerging air threats, including UAV swarms and low-flying drones.
