Lockheed Martin Wins $383 Million to Propel Next-Gen Naval Defense Solutions for the U.S. Navy
The U.S. Navy has awarded Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) an impressive $383 million cost-plus-incentive-fee and cost-plus-fixed-fee adjustment to its existing contract focused on the evolution of the next-generation Trident II Strategic Weapons System (SWS) D5 missile, ensuring the nation’s maritime defensive capabilities remain robust.
Under this contract adjustment, Lockheed Martin will construct the upgraded missile, referred to as the Trident II D5 Life Extension 2 (D5LE2). This state-of-the-art, integrated missile will be positioned on COLUMBIA-class ballistic missile submarines to confirm that the strategic weapons system stays operational until 2084.
“The second life extension of the Trident D5 missile will empower the United States and the United Kingdom, through the Polaris Sales Agreement, to uphold credibility against emerging threats,” remarked Jerry Mamrol, vice president of Fleet Ballistic Missiles at Lockheed Martin. “We are privileged to sustain our crucial collaboration with the U.S. Navy to usher deterrence into this new chapter.”
Strengthening Deterrence
The D5 missile, designed and upgraded by Lockheed Martin for the Navy, represents the most advanced ballistic missile worldwide and is currently stationed on U.S. OHIO-class and U.K. VANGUARD-class submarines. This year, Lockheed Martin commemorates 70 years of dedication to the Navy, innovating and maintaining the missiles that form the backbone of the nation’s sea-based defense through the company’s Fleet Ballistic Missiles (FBM) initiative.
Lockheed Martin’s FBM initiative is vital for protecting American and allied security, energized by innovation through state-of-the-art digital technologies, advanced production facilities, and a culture of excellence.
New Florida Facility for the Future
Lockheed Martin is commencing the establishment of an approximate 225,000 square foot facility in Titusville, Florida, aimed at fabricating components for the D5LE2 submarine-launched ballistic missile.
This new facility expands Lockheed Martin’s presence in Florida’s Space Coast and is projected to create around 300 highly-skilled job opportunities.
“Under the leadership of Governor Ron DeSantis, Florida continues to invest in our aerospace, aviation, military, and defense sectors – cultivating high-skill, high-wage career opportunities within the state,” stated Florida Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly. “Strategic investments like this enhance Florida’s workforce by generating 300 jobs and ensuring economic prosperity for local communities.”
The facility is anticipated to commence operations in 2027 to meet the Navy’s production requirements and support the service for the next 60 years.
