“EDGE Launches Innovative Swarming Drone Technology for UAS at UMEX 2022”

EDGE, a pioneering technology consortium for defense and beyond, and among the top 25 defense contractors worldwide, has introduced swarming drones—its most recent innovation in unmanned aerial systems (UAS)—on the inaugural day of the Unmanned Systems Exhibition and Conference (UMEX 2022), occurring at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) until 23 February.

As the official Strategic Partner for the event during its second participation at UMEX, EDGE demonstrated its swarming drones, derived from the Hunter 2 series of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) developed by HALCON, a regional frontrunner in the manufacture and distribution of precision-guided munitions and UAS. Crafted to secure a decisive advantage in warfare, these ground-launched drones maneuver in formation to execute coordinated tasks that can overpower an opponent.

Utilizing cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) technology, the tactical drones exchange data with each other to monitor and maintain their relative positions, enabling them to effectively engage targets. With a maximum take-off weight of 8kg, the swarm of drones is nimble and responsive while converging on their objectives, which could include hostile fighter jets stationed at a military base, or an approaching convoy of enemy armored vehicles, for instance.

The drones are designed to operate at cruising velocities that enhance mission success, showcasing a considerable communication range and robust flight endurance. The winged UAVs can be deployed in mere seconds, featuring a wingspan of 1.44m and a length of 1.25m.

Reflecting on the integration of swarming drones into HALCON’s already remarkable collection of UAVs, CEO Saeed Al Mansoori stated, “We recognize AI as a vital element in the evolution of the defense sector and beyond, and EDGE and HALCON are committed to remaining at the forefront of these innovations that are influencing our industry and the broader global landscape, from our hub in the UAE. The degree of autonomy offered by these swarming drones marks a significant milestone for us, and we are dedicated to accelerating R&D investments in these fields to swiftly bring related products to market in autonomous systems and smart munitions.”

The EDGE showcase at UMEX highlights HALCON’s technological leadership within the UAV sector, displaying products such as its Shadow 25 and Shadow 50 UAVs; Hunter series of drones and tube launchers; as well as the newly unveiled REACH-S unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV).

UMEX stands as the sole event in the Middle East dedicated to drones, robots, unmanned systems, and their components, providing EDGE the platform to exhibit its cutting-edge capabilities and solutions.
