Leonardo Unveils Cutting-Edge Defense Innovations for Naval and Ground Forces

Leonardo has unveiled two cutting-edge turrets for maritime and terrestrial defense, showcasing them for the first time at Seafuture (La Spezia, 5-8 June). The turrets, namely the LIONFISH® 30 and the HITFIST® 30 UL, introduce sophisticated capabilities and performance enhancements to their respective product lines. Both remotely-operated turrets feature the state-of-the-art 30mm X-GUN, an ITAR-exempt, electrically-driven weapon system developed internally by Leonardo, which encompasses innovative, patented technologies.

The LIONFISH® 30 naval turret expands Leonardo’s lineup of small-caliber LIONFISH® products, which features the 12.7mm Ultralight, Inner Reloading, and Top variants, in addition to a 20mm model. The sleek and lightweight profile of the 30 enables installation on smaller platforms, providing defense against various asymmetric threats, including drones and helicopters, within intricate scenarios with multiple targets. This capability is powered by advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms that conduct contextual analysis and enhance engagement against several simultaneous threats. Additional noteworthy characteristics consist of a rapid firing rate, extended operational range, and compatibility with next-generation high-efficiency air burst ammunition featuring preformed fragmentation, designed to effectively neutralize aerial threats such as mini and micro drones. The system shares a number of attributes with other LIONFISH family models, including its architecture, remote control capability via a high-resolution local console, and simplicity of use and maintenance. The new turret is also fitted with an electro-optical suite that provides 360° surveillance and tracking.

In the terrestrial sector, Leonardo is introducing the HITFIST® 30 UL (Unmanned Light) remote-operated turret. More compact and lighter than other variants within the HITFIST family, this system can be mounted on vehicles that face stringent weight constraints, including amphibious models. It proves effective against a broad spectrum of asymmetrical threats utilizing air burst ammunition.

Leonardo has carefully engineered these new defense systems for application in contemporary, ever-evolving operational environments where threats, particularly airborne ones, are becoming progressively more intricate. The new additions complement a portfolio that includes the highly sought-after 76/62 Super Rapido and 127/64 Light Weight Vulcano naval guns, as well as the 105/120 HITFACT® and 25/30 HITFIST® turrets for land applications, which are employed by numerous nations around the globe.
