Hensoldt Lands Major Deal for Enhanced TRS-4D Radar Systems to Fortify Germany’s F126 Frigates
The sensor technology provider HENSOLDT has secured another contract from Thales for the supply of TRS-4D naval radars intended for the German Navy’s F126 frigates. This elevates the total contract value to exceed 200 million euros.
The original agreement established in 2022 included the delivery of TRS-4D naval radars for four Niedersachsen-class frigates (F126) and a radar segment designated for the testing facilities. With this enhancement, an additional two F126 frigates will be equipped. The TRS-4D naval radar, developed by HENSOLDT, will be utilized in its static configuration, featuring four fixed antenna arrays. The integration of the radar on the ships and land systems will be carried out by Thales to develop a fully operational and combat-ready system that complies with German standards. This contract extension will result in an adjusted delivery schedule.
‘Our TRS-4D and its high-quality components will be deployed on six vessels of the German Navy in the forthcoming period, ensuring a significant level of consistency for the client,’ remarked Markus Rothmaier, Head of Naval & Ground Radars at HENSOLDT. ‘We are actively working on the radars for the four frigates daily and are excited that the option for two additional units has been taken up.’
Launched in 2020, the F126 program is the German Navy’s latest frigate initiative. Following the contract extension, the F126 class will consist of six ships. The endeavor also includes multiple land-based testing and training sites. TRS-4D radars are already actively in use in various formats on German Navy vessels, including the F125 frigate and the K130 corvette. This product series also comprises the ground-based air defense radar, TRML-4D, which is showcasing exceptional detection capabilities in Ukraine. The family-centric approach supports continuous product improvements and enhances spare parts availability along with training efficiency.
