Saab Secures Gripen Deal with Hungary: A New Era in Defense Collaboration
Saab has officially entered into a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) and has secured an order for an additional four Gripen C fighter jets for Hungary.
This new order is a result of an amendment to the agreement between FMV and the Hungarian Government, initially signed in December 2001, concerning 14 Gripen C/D fighter planes for the Hungarian Air Force. The contract amendment for the four extra planes was ratified by the Hungarian Ministry of Defence and FMV on 23 February 2024. With this latest agreement, Hungary will possess a total of 18 Gripen C/D aircraft, enhancing the capability to protect and secure both Hungarian and NATO airspace.
“With the Gripen fighter, Hungary has secured one of the most proficient air forces in Europe. We anticipate fostering our strong partnership with the Hungarian Government and defense industry,” remarks Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab.
Saab currently maintains a contract with FMV for the support of Hungary’s Gripen aircraft and is poised to offer further upgrades and assistance for the Hungarian jets after 2035.
Furthermore, Saab and the Hungarian Ministry of Defence have finalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on the advancement of high-tech industrial sectors and combat aircraft capabilities. This collaboration includes the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for VR technologies in Hungary.
