Rheinmetall’s Strategic Move: Embracing the Frontier of Autonomous Robotics with Provectus in Canada
The acquisition of Canadian firm Provectus Robotics Solutions Inc. significantly enhances Rheinmetall’s expertise in robotics and autonomous driving sectors. This integration will allow both the Automotive and Defence branches of the Group to leverage the skills of the newly merged robotics expert. Automation and digitalization are vital technology domains that Rheinmetall is actively fostering, consolidating knowledge and capabilities to seize further growth opportunities.
As of June 1, 2019, Rheinmetall Canada Inc., a subsidiary of the Düsseldorf-based Rheinmetall Group, obtained 100% ownership of the Ontario-based company. Founded in 2010, Provectus Robotics Solutions specializes in developing advanced robotic systems and software. Although now part of Rheinmetall Canada, Provectus will maintain its operations under the leadership of former managing director, Paul Rocco.
In recent demonstrations, Rheinmetall has garnered considerable attention with its Mission Master unmanned multi-mission vehicle, built on Provectus technology and adapted for military applications by Rheinmetall Canada. All indications suggest that unmanned ground vehicles are poised to play an increasingly prominent role in future military operations, paralleling the impact of unmanned aerial vehicles in aviation. Some will function in unarmed logistical or reconnaissance roles, while others will serve as mobile weapon platforms.
“We have been closely collaborating with Provectus in our unmanned ground vehicle initiative. This vertical integration yields a vital advantage in autonomous mobility technology,” stated Stéphane Oehrli, president and CEO of Rheinmetall Canada.
“Considering that this capability is a key enabler for the Automotive division, the entire Rheinmetall Group will gain from Provectus’ expertise. The automation of other Rheinmetall mobile platforms is an innovation we are currently exploring.”
As Paul Rocco from Provectus points out, “Rheinmetall Canada provides the perfect foundation for accelerating our growth while enhancing our position in Canada and globally. This is a remarkable opportunity for the Provectus team to significantly augment our market potential in autonomous driving and uncover new pathways.”
The acquisition aligns with Rheinmetall’s intention to position itself as a favored supplier of advanced technology both internationally and particularly in Canada, where the Group has a longstanding, trusted relationship with the nation’s armed forces.
Rheinmetall is eager to apply the insights gained from Provectus Robotics Solutions in executing ISTAR, a significant operation currently underway by the Canadian armed forces. (ISTAR stands for Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance.)
