Russia Launches Cutting-Edge MLRS and Kalashnikov Drone Arsenal in Riyadh

Unveiling Cutting-Edge Military Technology at World Defense Show 2026

During the World Defense Show 2026, held from February 8 to 12 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Russia’s Rosoboronexport introduced its latest innovations in multiple rocket launcher systems (MLRS) and loitering munitions. The highlight was the 300 mm Sarma MLRS and the RUS-PE drone.

Revolutionary Features of the 300mm Sarma MLRS

The next-generation 300mm MLRS, developed by the Rostec State Corporation, is based on extensive operational experience in rocket artillery. This model features advanced electronic components that have significantly enhanced performance over traditional models, resulting in reduced readiness times and improved target engagement accuracy at distances of up to 120 km.

Enhanced Mobility and Rapid Response

A standout feature of the Sarma MLRS is its impressive mobility. The system can be set up or relocated in just three minutes, enabling a full salvo of six missiles to be fired within 18 seconds. These rapid capabilities place the Sarma among the top performers in the global MLRS market, ensuring survivability during counter-battery operations. The vehicle can reach speeds of 95 km/h on roads, and its armored cabin provides critical protection against mines, shell fragments, and 7.62mm armor-piercing rounds.

Diverse Ammunition Options

The Sarma is capable of firing a comprehensive range of 300mm unguided rockets along with three types of guided rockets: 9M543, 9M544, and 9M549, making it a versatile tool for modern military operations.

Integrated Reconnaissance and Strike Systems

At the exhibition, the Sarma MLRS was presented as part of an integrated reconnaissance-and-strike system, complemented by the Supercam S350 UAV for target recognition and the Planshet-A command and control system on the Atlet armored chassis.

Insights from Military Experts

Igor Korotchenko, editor-in-chief of National Defense magazine, emphasized that the Sarma system was designed based on real combat experiences. He noted, “Sarma is an evolution of the Smerch and Tornado heavy MLRS line, often referred to as the ‘Russian HIMARS’ due to its superior performance capabilities.”

Korotchenko also highlighted the strength of the Russian military industry, stating, “Our capacity not only meets the needs of the Russian army but also positions us to provide weapons systems to strategic partners and allies.”

Introducing the RUS-PE Loitering Munition

The show also featured the latest loitering munitions from the Kalashnikov Group. The RUS-PE represents Russia’s first domestically produced containerized loitering munition, available in two variants with either a 1- or 2-kg warhead. It incorporates a seeker for fully autonomous operation and utilizes AI algorithms for effective target detection and identification.

Growing Importance of Drones in Modern Warfare

Military expert Alexander Khrolenko remarked that the experience gained during recent military operations has propelled drones to become a rapidly expanding sector in the Russian defense industry. “During operations, our loitering munitions effectively neutralized several thousand targets. The West hasn’t matched this capability yet,” he shared.

A representative from the Kalashnikov Group confirmed that this new loitering munition has already undergone successful combat testing.
