U.S. Enhances Lebanese Defense with $50 Million Gear and Armament Upgrade

U.S. Ambassador Elizabeth H. Richard presided over a crucial delivery of American military assistance to the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) at the Beirut Port. This shipment, valued at $50 million, equips the LAF with an additional 50 armored Humvees, 40 Howitzer field artillery units, 50 MK-19 grenade launchers, and vast quantities of ammunition, including small, medium, and heavy artillery rounds. Joined by Brigadier General Manuel Kirejian, LAF Deputy Chief of Staff for Equipment, Ambassador Richard underscored the enduring U.S. dedication to empowering the LAF in its brave endeavors to safeguard the Lebanese populace and sovereignty against extremist threats.

During the handover, Ambassador Richard remarked:

“Good morning, everyone. I am delighted to be here with General Kirejian for this ceremony today. The United States serves as Lebanon’s primary security partner. This year, we have dedicated over $221 million in resources and training to Lebanese security forces. It is important to note that Lebanon stands as the 5th largest recipient of U.S. foreign military funding worldwide. This highlights our steadfast commitment.

Today’s event signifies the arrival of an entire cargo of equipment intended to assist the Lebanese Armed Forces in countering extremists and securing national borders. The equipment presented behind us will empower Lebanese soldiers to operate securely within their designated zones. Furthermore, some of this equipment provides them the capacity to take proactive measures against threats. Today, we are showcasing approximately $50 million worth of resources – comprising 50 Humvees, 40 Howitzers, 50 grenade launchers, and over 1,000 tons of ammunition.

Esteemed guests, I must underscore that this is a collaborative effort. We are genuinely inspired by the determination and bravery exhibited by the Lebanese soldiers. They are ordinary individuals risking their lives daily to safeguard the Lebanese people and the nation.
