U.S. Ambassador Elizabeth H. Richard officiated a significant consignment of American military support to the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) at the Beirut Port. This consignment, valued at $50 million, equips the LAF with an extra 50 armored Humvees, 40 Howitzer field artillery units, 50 MK-19 grenade launchers, and extensive quantities of ammunition, which include small, medium, and heavy artillery rounds. Accompanied by Brigadier General Manuel Kirejian, LAF Deputy Chief of Staff for Equipment, Ambassador Richard highlighted the enduring U.S. commitment to empowering the LAF in its courageous efforts to protect the Lebanese populace and sovereignty against extremist threats.
During the delivery, Ambassador Richard stated:
“Good morning, everyone. I am thrilled to be here with General Kirejian for this ceremony today. The United States is Lebanon’s foremost security ally. This year, we have allocated over $221 million in resources and training to Lebanese security forces. I’d like to emphasize that Lebanon ranks as the 5th largest beneficiary of U.S. foreign military financing globally. This underscores our unwavering commitment.
Today’s event marks the arrival of a whole shipload of equipment designed to assist the Lebanese Armed Forces in combating extremists and securing the nation’s borders. The equipment showcased behind us will enable Lebanese soldiers to operate safely within their designated areas. Additionally, some of this equipment empowers them to take proactive measures in combating threats. What we have here today includes around $50 million worth of resources – comprising 50 Humvees, 40 Howitzers, 50 grenade launchers, and over 1,000 tons of ammunition.
Esteemed guests, I must emphasize that this is a collaborative endeavor. We are genuinely inspired by the commitment and resolve demonstrated by the Lebanese soldiers. They are ordinary individuals risking their lives daily to protect the Lebanese people and the nation. We are equally impressed by the planning capabilities of the Lebanese Armed Forces, reflecting a deep understanding of what is necessary for success. We have worked diligently to promptly address those requests.
Lastly, I want to express that today’s consignment is substantial. It signifies not just our commitment to stand alongside Lebanon in current challenges. We are here to support you today and will continue to back you in the long term as you combat extremism and uphold the cherished way of life in Lebanon. We are indeed pleased to be here with our partners today.
