Saab Wins U.S. Deal for Cutting-Edge Carl-Gustaf Munitions Technology

The defense and security company Saab has acquired an ammunition agreement from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) for the Carl-Gustaf portable weapon system, known in the U.S. as M3 MAAWS (Multi-role, Anti-armor Anti-personnel Weapon System). The contract amounts to USD 5.4 million (MSEK 46).

This agreement falls within the framework arrangement established with the DoD in August 2014 for the 84-mm recoilless rifle system.

“The Carl-Gustaf, with its wide variety of munition types, has consistently demonstrated its efficacy in the most demanding conditions, establishing itself as a multifaceted and powerful resource for soldiers. This contract highlights the steadfast trust from the client in the system,” remarks Michael Andersson, President and CEO of Saab Area North America.

The Carl-Gustaf is recognized as a leading weapon system in the support weapon category. It has been consistently modernized to meet the changing demands of users. The newest variant, the Carl-Gustaf M4 (designated M3E1 in the U.S.), has reduced its weight from 10 kg to under 7 kg. Carl-Gustaf is a combat-ready system for personnel operating in demanding environments. By employing a varied range of ammunition types, the Carl-Gustaf system empowers dismounted forces to address numerous challenges – from neutralizing armored targets to clearing barriers and engaging adversaries in urban scenarios.
