WINNIPEG – August 23, 2016 — Public Services & Procurement Canada has engaged Polaris to supply 36 Polaris Defense turbo diesel MRZR (MRZR-D) utility task vehicles and 12 tactical trailers via Polaris Industries Ltd, the Canada-based division of Polaris Industries Inc. MRZRs deliver essential ultralight, off-road mobility prized by the expeditionary forces utilizing them across the U.S. and in over 20 allied nations.
To match the portability of the soldiers employing them, MRZR vehicles are H-47 (Chinook), H-53 and V-22 (Osprey) air transportable and can be adapted in various configurations, including two-, four- and six-passenger setups. The turbocharged diesel engine in the latest MRZR-D has been meticulously designed to fulfill the performance and physical specifications of the original MRZR vehicles. While numerous core features – such as dimensions, payload capacity, towing ability, ground clearance, accessories, handling, and more – remain intact, Polaris has integrated field feedback into the new model, enhancing occupant seating space, ergonomics, and visibility. The MRZR-D additionally offers enhanced auxiliary power and an extended range, making it even more efficient.
“MRZRs provide a highly desirable capability by offering infantrymen burdened with heavy packs a mode of transport that allows for quicker movement while retaining the advantage of concealed, off-road operation,” stated Stephen Panciocco, Program Manager, Polaris Defense. “We are thrilled that the Canadian Army has chosen Polaris to explore this capability and look forward to supporting them.”
For the Canadian Army, every MRZR-D will be outfitted with IR lighting, a 2,041 kg (4500 lb) winch, and a variety of other standard and tactical features utilized by the U.S. and allied forces. The tactical trailer provides an additional 454 kg (1000 lb) payload. It is engineered to keep pace with the MRZR and boasts a fully independent suspension system, along with a detachable tongue and pintle style hitch, enabling 180 degrees of rotation in confined areas, enhancing mobility and simplifying transportation and storage. The sides are interchangeable, and the rear gate folds for maximum storage versatility.
The contract was awarded in June by Public Services & Procurement Canada on behalf of the Department of National Defence, with an option for acquiring up to 18 more MRZR-Ds and as many as six additional tactical trailers. The vehicles and trailers will be delivered to the light infantry battalions stationed at Canadian Forces Bases in Edmonton, Petawawa, and Valcartier for assessment later this year. Production of the original gas-powered MRZR 2 and MRZR 4 continues under the LTATV program for USSOCOM and additional international agreements.
Polaris Defense vehicles deliver an unparalleled mix of deployability, adaptability, and off-road maneuverability, developed from over 60 years of unmatched off-road vehicle experience. Offerings include the rugged Sportsman MV 850, the versatile and agile MRZR, and the DAGOR, which enhances the payload, range, and off-road capabilities compared to any prior tactical off-road vehicle. The superior tactical mobility provided by Polaris Defense grants an edge back to dismounted troops, empowering formations to move rapidly, carry larger loads, and significantly lower combat fatigue. Polaris FSR support is deployable internationally and encompasses military vehicle training, servicing, and maintenance. It can also be supplemented globally through the extensive Polaris network of distributors. With Polaris vehicles utilized worldwide, there is a high degree of interoperability and uniformity among U.S. and allied forces.
