In a groundbreaking demonstration, the U.S. Navy successfully test-launched two Raytheon (NYSE: RTN)-produced Tomahawk cruise missiles using newly designed submarine payload tubes onboard the Virginia-class USS North Dakota (SSN-784). The trials, conducted in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Florida, validated the submarine’s capacity to load, transport, and execute vertical launches of Tomahawk missiles from the innovative Block III Virginia Payload Tube. These enhanced tubes reduce components and improve reliability.
Alongside the new payload tubes, the Navy is also in the process of creating a new Virginia Payload Module. These modules will increase the carrying capacity of Tomahawk missiles on Virginia-class submarines threefold, significantly enhancing each submarine’s offensive capabilities.
“As the Navy persists in modernizing its submarines, Raytheon is concurrently enhancing the Tomahawk, ensuring this unrivaled weapon remains ahead of emerging threats,” stated Mike Jarrett, Vice President of Raytheon Air Warfare Systems. “Today’s Tomahawk is significantly advanced compared to its predecessors, and the upcoming iteration will incorporate even more functionalities, equipping our sailors for the challenges ahead for decades.”
The U.S. Navy is continuing to enhance the Tomahawk Block IV’s communication and navigation systems, also integrating a multi-mode seeker that allows it to target high-value, mobile threats at sea. These updated Tomahawks are slated for deployment starting in 2019 and are expected to remain in the U.S. Navy’s arsenal beyond 2040.
Having been utilized in combat over 2,300 times, Tomahawk cruise missiles serve the U.S. and British forces to neutralize integrated air defense systems and perform long-range precision strikes on high-value objectives. Surface vessels and various submarine models can accommodate upwards of 100 Tomahawks as necessary.
