Boeing’s 2024 Sustainability Journey: A Bold Leap Towards People-Centric and Planet-Friendly Progress
Boeing today unveiled its 2024 Sustainability & Social Impact Report, detailing our advancements in service of our workforce, our planet, and our local communities.
“We’re privileged to communicate the consistent advancements we’ve achieved in sustainability, which will perpetually be rooted in safety and excellence,” stated Boeing Chief Sustainability Officer Brian Moran. “As we reaffirm our commitment to these core principles, it’s invigorating to witness our organization’s dedication to assisting our industry in decarbonization while enhancing our communities and fostering an inclusive culture where every voice is acknowledged.”
Highlights in this year’s report include:
- 39% of energy powering Boeing’s operations was derived from renewable electricity in 2023 through a mix of direct acquisitions and renewable energy credits.
- A 6.4-point uptick in the proportion of our U.S. workforce represented by racial/ethnic minorities, alongside a 1.2-point increase in the percentage of women within Boeing’s global workforce, both since 2020.
- A 100,000-hour rise in employee volunteer engagements in 2023, totaling 477,000 hours dedicated to philanthropic initiatives globally.
- $60 million in employee contributions, including support from the Boeing Gift Match Program to nonprofit organizations.
- Over 100 key stakeholders participated, and 20 significant events were backed by the Boeing Cascade Climate Impact Model, which examines aviation’s tactics to reduce emissions.
Boeing has been refining its carbon management strategy to an ‘avoid first, remove second’ approach.
Avoiding first involves the mitigation of carbon emissions by lowering and/or circumventing those emissions at the source, such as through ongoing investment in renewable energy and efficient infrastructure while promoting resource conservation.
Removing second pertains to applying offsets and removals for difficult-to-eliminate emissions. To enhance and diversify our offset portfolio over time, Boeing is amplifying its investments in permanent carbon removal initiatives. Boeing will also endorse vital technology and policy advancements in support of the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), the global market-driven measure that our airline clients support.
