Germany and France Unite for the Next Chapter of the MGCS Initiative
France and Germany have formalized a pact to propel the upcoming phase of the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) initiative, with the goal of engineering a new European main battle tank by 2040, aimed at supplanting their existing fleets. This partnership builds on a rich lineage of collaboration, despite previous hurdles caused by disagreements.
The defense leaders of both nations remain devoted to surmounting these variances.
Their endorsement of the renewed pact is pivotal for sustaining progress on this ambitious initiative. The MGCS program transcends mere equipment, representing the promise for a more strategically independent European defense sector.
A consortium led by Germany, which includes KNDS, Rheinmetall, and Thales, will lead the development with equal financial support from both nations.

French Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu highlighted the cooperative essence of the initiative, calling it a landmark for the future of armored forces in Europe.
German counterpart Boris Pistorius reiterated this view, recognizing the obstacles ahead but underscoring the importance of this progression.
