“GM Defense Partners with Tawazun Council to Revolutionize Advanced Mobility Solutions in the UAE”

GM Defense LLC, a subsidiary of General Motors (GM), and the Tawazun Council have today finalized a collaborative Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) as an initial move towards an official alliance aimed at cultivating future products in the domains of advanced mobility and power solutions. The MOU was endorsed at the Tawazun Council Chalet during IDEX 2023 by Shareef Hashim Al Hashmi, CEO of Tawazun Council, along with Steve duMont, President of GM Defense.

With the MOU established, GM Defense — leveraging the reliable commercial innovations of its parent organization, GM, alongside the extensive battery electric investments initiated by GM to introduce cutting-edge solutions for global defense and governmental clients — and Tawazun Council — the UAE governmental body that fosters defense and security investments while encouraging innovation and R&D in the defense sector — will pursue collaboration with a shared aim of providing efficient and sophisticated solutions to military, security, and governmental stakeholders from the UAE and the broader region. Key opportunities highlighted by the MOU include collaborative research and development, regional manufacturing and assembly, and post-production assistance and global logistics centered around essential technology areas, including integrated vehicles; power and propulsion — featuring fuel cells and power generation; as well as autonomy and connectivity.

“Our partnership with Tawazun Council signifies a pivotal advancement in broadening our engagement with defense and governmental clients in the Middle East,” stated Steve duMont, President of GM Defense. “We are dedicated to nurturing long-term, valuable connections in the area and providing solutions that encompass some of the most sophisticated, commercially validated technologies, ensuring reliability and adaptability. With this MOU secured, we can more adeptly support our global clientele in transitioning to a more electrified, autonomous, and interconnected future.”

“Today’s agreement signifies a significant, new collaboration that further fortifies our nation’s domestic defense industrial foundation while presenting new avenues for an expanding technology development and supply partnership with GM Defense,” remarked Shareef Al Hashmi, CEO of Tawazun Council. “Tawazun is uniquely situated within the region as a resource for operations, manufacturing, and development for world-class technology enterprises such as GM Defense. Our robust global alliance establishes us as a favorable partner.”

The MOU with Tawazun Council is GM Defense’s inaugural partnership in the Middle East and aids the organization in broadening its influence after the 2022 declaration of GM Defense International. GM Defense’s capacity to leverage GM’s state-of-the-art commercial platforms, premier manufacturing, and expansive supply chain along with advanced electrification technologies empowers the company to deliver commercially validated, optimal value solutions characterized by innovation, speed, and flexibility.
