Revolutionary Firepower: Rheinmetall Launches Cutting-Edge 60mm Mortar for Ground Forces and Special Ops

Rheinmetall has developed a revolutionary 60mm mortar designed specifically for infantry and special operations units. The RSG60 features state-of-the-art design and engineering characteristics that make this indirect fire system exceptionally lightweight and user-friendly. With only a few quick manual adjustments, the standard infantry model, weighing 15.8 kg, can be converted into a commando mortar with a mere weight of 6.8 kg, removing the need for tools. This adaptability positions the RSG60 as a noteworthy dual-purpose solution.

Depending on the type of ammunition and charges utilized, the standard variant can achieve ranges of up to 3,200 meters. By integrating a barrel that is thirty centimeters longer, the effective range increases by about 500 meters. The commando version of the RSG60 offers a firing range of approximately 2,000 meters.

With a length of about 70 centimeters, the barrel is made from steel and encased in carbon fiber. This combination ensures necessary durability while significantly reducing weight, resulting in a barrel that is roughly 30 percent lighter than conventional steel mortars. The base plate is crafted from carbon fiber composite material. The innovative configuration of this indirect fire system not only saves space but can be assembled and made ready to fire within seconds. Additionally, by loosening the holding bolts, the RSG60 can be separated from the base plate in roughly thirty seconds, allowing for easier portability as a commando mortar.

The design of this advanced mortar began in October 2017 at Rheinmetall Waffe Munition. The company sought to improve the Group’s extensive range of 60mm ammunition and existing Rheinmetall Electronics fire control technologies with a forward-thinking weapon system. Hence, from the beginning, the emphasis of development centered on lightweight construction, rapid deployment, and ergonomic design.

The RSG60 has consistently passed rigorous test firings, affirming its reliability and effectiveness.
