Unveiling the Future: Hornet and Milrem Robotics Showcase Cutting-Edge Combat UGV at DSEI

The French manufacturer of remote weapon systems, Hornet, in collaboration with Europe’s premier developer of robotics and autonomous technologies, Milrem Robotics, showcases the innovative THeMIS Combat unmanned ground vehicle at DSEI 2021 in London.

This system integrates Milrem Robotics’ THeMIS unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) alongside the Hornet Remote Controlled Weapon System (RCWS). Originally designed for the new French 4×4 and 6×6 armored vehicle initiative “Scorpion”, the Hornet incorporates distinctive attributes tailored for UGV functions.

“The Hornet features a specialized cleaning mechanism for the optronics, along with the capability to retract sensors to shield them from debris and destruction – critical components for an unmanned system operated remotely. Additionally, it boasts a safeguarded ammunition feed,” stated Jean Boy, Managing Director of Hornet, remarking that the Hornet was designed with the French Army’s rigorous standards for firing precision in mind.

THeMIS Combat UGVs deliver direct fire support for maneuvering forces, acting as a force multiplier that enhances stand-off distance, force safety, and situational awareness. The THeMIS incorporates intelligent functionalities such as waypoint navigation, follow-me mode, and obstacle detection and avoidance. These intelligent features are dedicated solely to mobility, while the weapon system remains under human control.

“Combat robotics represents the future of warfare, significantly boosting the capabilities and resilience of tactical units. Milrem Robotics’ THeMIS is the favored UGV for weapon system integrations. Paired with the forward-thinking Hornet, equipped with various innovative attributes, we have developed an unmanned solution that empowers combat units to tackle contemporary challenges on the battlefield with greater efficacy,” noted Captain (res) Jüri Pajuste, Director of Defence Research and Development at Milrem Robotics.

Milrem Robotics stands as the leading developer and systems integrator for robotics and autonomous technologies in Europe, with offices situated in Estonia, Sweden, Finland, and soon in the Netherlands.

The company heads the iMUGS Consortium, which has been granted 30.6 MEUR from the European Commission’s European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP) to create a standardized European unmanned ground system (UGS).
