Lebanon Fortifies Its Forces: U.S. Greenlights $34.5 Million Humvee Purchase
The U.S. State Department has authorized a significant Foreign Military Sale to the Lebanese Government, which includes M1151A1 High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs) and associated equipment, totaling an estimated $34.5 million. This decision comes after the Defense Security Cooperation Agency provided the necessary certification to Congress.
Lebanon has sought to acquire an additional ninety (90) M1151A1 HMMWVs, complementing an earlier deal valued below the congressional notification threshold. The initial Foreign Military Sales agreement, worth $12.26 million (with $10.85 million allocated for Major Defense Equipment), involved fifty HMMWVs. This notification brings the total to one hundred forty HMMWVs. Additional non-MDE items included in the deal are: an RF-7850M-HH multiband handheld radio, GPS receivers, Quicklook electronic counter-countermeasures waveform, spare and repair parts, technical publications, training services, U.S. Government and contractor support, and other logistic elements essential for program support.
This proposal not only enhances U.S. foreign policy but also bolsters national security by strengthening a key ally in the Middle East, contributing to political and economic stability.
The inclusion of these vehicles provides the Lebanese Armed Forces with a versatile and agile combat capability, empowering them to swiftly address security challenges and implement effective counter-terrorism strategies. Additionally, this acquisition promotes joint military training and operational collaboration between U.S. and Lebanese military leaders.
Crucially, this proposed sale will maintain the existing military balance in the region.
The primary contractor for this deal will be AM General, based in South Bend, IN. Currently, there are no known offset agreements in connection with this potential sale; any such agreements will be negotiated directly between the purchaser and the contractor.
It’s important to note that this proposed sale will not necessitate the deployment of additional U.S. Government or contractor representatives to Lebanon.
This initiative is not expected to negatively impact U.S. defense readiness.
The figures presented represent the maximum estimated quantity and dollar value based on preliminary requirements. The final value may vary, depending on actual requirements, budget authority, and concluded sales agreements.
